Xetma
2023 / Typography
“XETMA” is a typeface I designed using beads from my jewelry practice and Milagros, or votive charms. While making this I was interested in what would happen when constructing a font out of gems, stones, and beads who’s purpose are for adornment on the body and for religious devotion.

This project was chosen by Everyday Practice, a design studio in Seoul, to be recognized in The Design Kids 2024 Awards, an international design competition for young designers.

Process:

Charms: The charm I started playing with was a leg because the idea of a walking type-face seemed exciting. I realized the shape of the charm was too limiting, and I did not want to alter the shape myself, so I decided to expand what I was working with. Instead of turning the charm into a vector, I decided to photograph each and collage them together on Photoshop. Eventually I returned to the b+w I was originally working with to maintain usability.
