Tiny DormsOctober 2023
-> Creative Direction, Video & Set Design, Social MediaTiny Dorms is a video series inspired by Tiny Desk that features some of the best student bands at Yale. It is filmed, mixed, and promoted by the Spring Fling committee. Each student act is filmed in one take, in an intimate dorm-like setting. I created Jazz album-cover art inspired illustrations for each of the artists to share interviews we conducted and to promote the videos on the Spring Fling Instagram.
Process:
Why Jazz Covers? I really like how color is used to block-out and highlight elements. The direction of attention is really powerful, as are the compositions, and playful nature of the imagery. The collage-like feel creating dark lines, and anthropomorphizing instruments reflects the unpredictability and wonder that is central to the genre.
Color Schemes: Although the art I drew inspiration from does not have bright colors, I choose vibrant color ways for my illustrations so they would fit the Spring Fling Instagram feed and over-all identity of the organization.
Logo: The playfulness of the Jazz covers bled into my thinking when designing the logo. I wanted to have removable elements I could expand so I created a spiral, flower, music note, and star. These can be found throughout my illustrations. To bring these elements more to life, I animated the logo which is used to open each Tiny Dorms video. I also used the logo in the merchandise I sold during the screening we hosted, filling up the 100-seat cinema. I carved the logo out of linoleum and then stamped it on various clothing items the committee thrifted.
BTS: While working on the graphics was awesome, I had so much fun on set with the whole team. I assisted in filming, organized and checked-out the equipment we needed, planned out each set with Reese Weiden, and sourced props for each artist.
